L - glutamine is an amino acid that enables the organism to produce proteins that are indispensable to the immune system, particularly those constituting human leucocytes.
Normally, the organism produces all the L - glutamine that it needs to manufacture these proteins. On the other hand, in periods of stress (illness, vigorous exertion, etc), the organism draws on its reserves of glutamine, which accumulate in the muscular tissues.
A study carried out on people who had undergone a bone-marrow transplant showed that the subjects who were given L - glutamine in the context of intravenous feeding had more CD4+ and CD8+ cells than those who had not been given any: As the CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts were particularly low in certain disorders of the immune system (VIH for example), L - glutamine supplements would reduce the number of infections. Furthermore, another study shows that people infected with VIH present a 30 % lower level of L-glutamine than those not infected.
In addition, the anabolising effect of L - glutamine makes it particularly indicated for the development of muscle tissue. In particular, during old age, it is well known that muscles fuse and present less recovery after exertion.
