But nopal leaves offer a wealth of other healing properties: they contain mucilage and pectins, two types of soluble fibres capable of absorbing several times their weight, giving a feeling of fullness, hence its appetite suppressant properties. By ‘coating’ the glucose molecules and lipids, they also help to reduce their absorption in the intestine.
Nopal’s capacity for soaking up glucose and lipids may be beneficial for diabetics or people suffering from hypercholesteraemia. While of course no substitute for prescription medical treatment, nopal acts to regulate blood sugar levels (glycaemia) by reducing triglyceride levels in the blood and hyperglycaemic peaks (raising blood sugar levels) after eating a meal containing carbohydrates (sugar).
