Hawthorn is a medicinal plant and its flowers, leaves and berries are collected for use (all parts can be used). It is used to treat all cardiovascular disorders.
It has a stimulating effect on the heart, which is particularly beneficial for older people wanting to take part in an exercise programme. More generally, since it has many flavonoids and other antioxidants (procyanidines etc.) hawthorn is a plant with excellent anti-ageing properties.
The extract should be taken for at least six weeks and sometimes for up to six months before its effects are felt.

Hawthorn has always been thought of as a plant with protective properties. Its branches brought happiness, health and prosperity to wedding couples in Ancient Greece and brought luck to Roman newborns. Its healing properties were already well known and hawthorn was used to treat insomnia, anxiety, palpitations and dizziness.
Thanks to the numerous active substances that it contains (crategine, oyacanthine, quercetine etc.) hawthorn has proven to be effective as a hypotensive, vasodilator and sedative. It is also effective in treating anxiety.
A large number of clinical trials have confirmed these effects, known to the World Health Organisation, and in respect of its effects on the heart, also to the European Commission.
A medical journal published in 2008 confirmed using the latest scientific data that hawthorn is a plant that is beneficial in the treatment of chronic heart disease.
