Lactic bacteria die if certain conditions are not observed. Their survival depends largely on the conditions under which they are kept (period of time, temperature). Probiotics (“for life”) are "good" bacteria which, following our digestive tracts down to the large intestine (or colon), regenerate our intestinal flora (which themselves have on average some 100 000 billion good bacteria!). The most common probiotics are produced from fermented milk and called Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus.
Lactobacillae are lactic bacteria which occur naturally in the human stomach, but also in the intestine and the colon. Their enzymatic activity promotes acid reduction in the digestive tract. Involved in improving the microbe balance of the digestive tract, they also protect against infections (while encouraging the balance of intestinal flora). Finally, they are said to increase intestinal absorption of cholesterol, while thus lowering the level, which means a reduction in the risk of heart problems.
