Description: Organic psyllium
ANASTORE presents its new NEPENTA® Digestive plants range: a range inspired by plants from the Nepenthes genus, known for secreting digestive enzymes.
Psyllium, or ispaghula (Plantago ovata Forssk., Plantaginaceae family), is a member of the Plantago genus, a genus with a wide geographic distribution and which contains around 200 species. The Plantago ovata species is grown mainly for its mucilage-rich seeds (1). It is an annual herbaceous plant with elongated leaves and white flowers, grouped into spikes (2).
Psyllium helps to maintain healthy bowel and contributes to intestinal transit and function (3). It is also useful for occasional constipation and in conditions in which easy defection with soft stools is desirable, such as in cases of haemorrhoids or anal fissures (4). Psyllium also lowers cholesterol and blood lipid levels (5).
Psyllium’s mechanism of action derives from its cellulose and mucilage content. Its mucilage has a great capacity to absorb water, bringing about an increase in the volume of intestinal content and in the bulk of stools. This causes an increase in intestinal peristalsis, the ultimate consequence of which is a laxative effect (6).
Organic psyllium seed husks from our NEPENTA® range are available in practical single-dose sachets and have a delicious lemon flavour. They are free from excipients, GMOs and pesticides. A daily dose (2 single-dose sachets) provides 7 g of organic psyllium seed husks.
