Healthy alternatives to coffee consumption

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Each place, each country and each culture has different tea consumption habits and traditions. It is well known as a caffeine-rich beverage. Caffeine is the substance that gives it its stimulant properties and contributes to its bitter taste.

Everything you need to know about caffeine

Caffeine is an alkaloid produced by the leaves, seeds and fruit of coffee. These fruits contain organic acids that condition and influence the taste, smell and aroma of coffee; and are responsible for its acidity. It also contains minerals (potassium, magnesium, calcium, chromium etc.) and vitamins (niacin).

Caffeine is a substance that easily penetrates all the cells of the body and stimulates the transmission of impulses between neurons. It is therefore accepted that consuming a daily quantity of caffeine of less than 300 milligrams, equivalent to two or three cups of coffee, tones the body, relieves fatigue, delays tiredness and enhances mental functions.

But the problem lies in the quality of the coffee we consume on a daily basis. In many cases, the problem is not quality, but that the daily recommended quantity is exceeded. Fortunately, nature offers healthy alternatives to coffee consumption.

The natural answer to vitality

So, what are these alternatives? Choices include Ginseng, Guarana, Spirulina and Rhodiola.

  1. Ginseng

Ginseng root has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has now confirmed that its use or consumption is suitable for combating symptoms of asthenia, such as fatigue and weakness.

Thanks to its bioactive compounds, Ginseng helps to restore the body’s overall balance and combat different types of stress thought to be related to a modulation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Several studies have associated chronic fatigue with oxidative stress, and found that consuming Ginseng has a positive effect on improving mood and mental performance, thanks to its antioxidant properties.

Our concentrated extract of organic Korean red Ginseng root (Panax Ginseng CA Meyer) is standardised to contain 15% ginsenosides, ensuring quality and effectiveness.

  1. Guarana

Guarana is considered a medicinal plant with great therapeutic properties that stimulate the central nervous system, as a tonic, stimulant, weight loss aid and aphrodisiac.

Its seeds contain xanthic bases, meaning they contain caffeine (3.5-8%) and theobromine (0.02--0.05%); catequinic tannins: 6% catechin, 3% epicatechin and proanthocyanidins; saponosides and essential oil. When the seeds are processed, depending on how they are processed, the caffeine content can be concentrated to greater than 10%.

Guarana helps to reduce fatigue, stimulates the body and has cardioprotective and antioxidant properties. Due to its high caffeine content, guarana is also used for weight loss, since it helps to increase metabolic rate and thermogenesis, promoting energy consumption.

Our guarana, with over 12% native caffeine, contains the highest percentage of this substance on the market.

  1. Spirulina

There is another powerful alternative tonic: spirulina. Spirulina is a blue-green cyanobacterium algae with photosynthetic capacity, formed of filaments with a distinctive helical structure and which grow in alkaline waters.

Spirulina has been consumed throughout history due to its high nutritional value. It is now considered a superfood, because it is rich in proteins (55-70% of its dry weight), carbohydrates (15-20%), fats (6-9%), fibres, manganese, zinc, magnesium, iron, selenium, alpha-linoleic acid, group B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E. Its phycobiliproteins also give it anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-ageing properties.

Another of its components is mucilage, meaning complex polysaccharides partially soluble in water. These have the ability to form gels that promote feelings of fullness, helping to control appetite.
Our spirulina is 100% natural and organic, and has high beta-carotene, iron, vitamin B12 and gamma-linoleic acid content.

  1. Rhodiola rosea

Finally, Rhodiola rosea is a plant with great regenerative qualities for health and is considered to fall within the group of adaptogenic plants. In other words, this plant contains a complex natural substance that enables the body to adapt to different stress situations, regardless of their causes.

In short, rhodiola is a plant that acts against mental and physical fatigue, restoring your mental vitality and natural dynamism.

Our Rhodiola rosea extract is standardised to contain 5% rosavins, which have excellent antioxidant qualities.
